"Surf's Up" A large wave is breaking over a newly born Harbor Seal. A fast shutter speed stopped the wave's action as it broke.
"Great White Egret in Flight" The Egret flew directly over my head and filled the picture frame. The angle makes it appear as if his wing is over his head.
"Sea Ranch Sentinel" A male California Quail on guard atop the yellow flowers while watching over his brood below.
"Bobby-Cat" A young bobcat was resting in a field by Pt. Arena Lighthouse. I was able to get this wonderful shot before he ran off.
"The Look" There is a large herd of Tule Elk at Point Reyes National Park. During the rut, the bulls are very protective of their females and he watched as I moved in closer to take this picture.
"Foxy Lady" This mother fox was stalking me while protecting her young. I got off one picture before I slowly moved away from her family.
"Crowned Cranes Craning" It is easy to figure out why these birds are called "African Crowned Cranes". Their "crowns" are truly regal.
"Fly United" Late one afternoon, two geese took off across our local pond. Luckily, I had my camera ready as they traveled across the top of the water.
"Here Kitty, Kitty" I had been photographing an adult bobcat. Then, I realized there was a young bobcat looking for its mother. The sun was setting and the golden light was perfect.
"TSR Fire Chief" The Sea Ranch (TSR) uses sheep as a method to reduce the open-space vegetation. This lone ram was resting in the late afternoon. He looked so regal and I liked the way his coat looked a bit "windblown".
"Bad Hair Day" A Snowy Egret displays during the breeding season.
"The Last Hurdle" I took several pictures hoping to catch a Steelhead jumping over the last barrier and, at last, got the picture that I had envisioned. A pleasant surprise was the mirror-reflection in the smooth water.
"Splash Landing" Patience is not only a virtue, but a requirement for wildlife photography. Occasionally, my patience is rewarded with shots like this.
"Log Jam" Late in the afternoon, pond turtles will bask in the warm sun. Looks like they all wanted the same log.
"Pray for Prey" This female Spotted Owl had two fledglings and movement on the forest floor had caught her attention. She soon returned to her perch with a mouse to feed one of her youngsters.
"Man, that Hurt!" Tule Lake had frozen over with a thin layer of ice. This Grebe had been under the water and, when he came up, broke through the ice-covered lake. Notice the shard of ice on its head.
"Dow's Up" Sea Otters can provide hours of enjoyment watching their behavior. This particular otter appeared to be smiling. In the current economy, it looked to me like he had gotten some good news!
"The Original Hummer" Taken in a neighbor's garden, the morning light brought out the gorgeous colors of this female Allen's hummingbird.
"Taking Flight" An unusual cold snap produced this hoar frost on the trees. The morning was clear and the trees stood out against the clear blue sky.
"Celebration" After splashing about in the water, this Chinese Goose spread his wings. The shutter speed was slow enough to blur the movement of the water which resulted in this unusual water pattern.
"Elk Camo" Roosevelt Elk emerging from trees entangled in the branches he had been rubbing against to remove the velvet from its antlers.
"Rush Hour" Grebe's "rushing" during breeding season.
"Looks Like Twins" Female Great Horned Owl with owlets. There are actually three babies in this small hole on the side of the cliff.
"Goose Foursome on the Tee" Canada Goose, Shovelers, Blackbird and Mallards sharing an island.
"High and Dry" A winter storm along the northern California Coast produced huge breaking waves. Cormorants, usually on the outer islands, took refuge atop this tall sea stack.
"Home Alone" These two fox kits were awaiting mom's return so they could have breakfast.
"Good Morning, World" A yellow-headed blackbird enjoyed the morning sun at the Lower Klamath Basin Refuge
